Miller, Manning fire as Broncos D stifle Panthers in Super Bowl

first_imgSANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP): A reborn Orange Crush might have sent Peyton Manning into retirement with a Super ending to his career. Von Miller and the impenetrable Denver defence harassed Panthers quarterback Cam Newton all game Sunday and the Broncos made enough big plays for a 24-10 victory, Manning’s 200th and perhaps his last before retirement. He wasn’t the star of Super Bowl 50 – game MVP Miller seemingly was everywhere on every Carolina play – but Manning really hasn’t been the headliner in this injury-shortened season. “This game was much like this season has been, testing our toughness, our resiliency, our unselfishness,” he said. “It’s only fitting that it turned out that way.” Emulating his Broncos boss, John Elway, the 39-year-old Manning can ride off with the Lombardi Trophy after leading Denver to their third NFL title, first since 1999 – when Elway was the quarterback. “I’ll take some time to reflect,” Manning said when asked if this is the end. “I got a couple of priorities first. I’m going to go kiss my wife and my kids. … I’m going to drink a lot of Budweiser tonight.” Denver’s suffocating defence kept Newton jittery all day. Despite wearing gold shoes before the golden Super Bowl, Newton couldn’t finish off a dynamic season in which he was the league’s MVP. Miller twice stripped him, once for a touchdown, the second time setting up a clinching TD. Denver’s top-ranked defence, the one that ran roughshod over Tom Brady in the AFC championship, simply wouldn’t let Newton get comfortable. “There was a certain point where it was like guys on the sideline were saying, ‘Cam is very stressed,'” Broncos cornerback Bradley Roby said. “For two weeks straight, that’s all we heard was Cam this, Cam that, dab this, dab that. They were dabbing in their team photos. It was very disrespectful. We wanted to come out and prove that we’re the best.” Newton was sacked six times – receiver Ted Ginn Jr went down once on an aborted trick play – and if Miller wasn’t torturing him, DeMarcus Ware was. Ware had two of the seven sacks, equalling the most by one team in the Super Bowl. Carolina led the league with 500 points, but were held to their fewest of the year and Denver set an ignominious mark with 194 yards gained, the fewest for a Super Bowl winner. So what, The Broncos (15-4) are champions and Manning is the first quarterback to win Super Bowls with two franchises; Indianapolis in 2007 was the other. Gary Kubiak is the first to win a Super Bowl as player and coach for the same team. Manning finished 13 for 23 for 141 yards against a strong Carolina (17-2) defence that just couldn’t match Miller and company. “I feel very, very grateful,” Manning said. … “Obviously, it’s very special to cap it off with a Super Bowl championship.”last_img read more

Could Wowd Be the Skype of Real-Time Search? Private Beta Invites

first_imgTags:#start#startups Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Trying to explain Wowd, a Silicon Valley-based search venture, is a buzzword extravaganza.Using cloud architecture and crowdsourced data on web pages, this real-time discovery and recommendation engine ranks pages based on whether users actually visited them and returns results from all over the web, not just a handful of indexed pages. Read on for the details on Wowd’s technology, a video interview with their CEO, and yes, invitations to join the private beta. It’s a downloaded app, but it runs in a browser. Personal information isn’t stored on a centralized server, and no registration is required; yet browsing history is saved to recommend more personally relevant and interesting content. The cloud arichitecture – that is, the distribution of processing power and bandwidth needed to power real-time indexing across all user desktops – allows Wowd to acheive a monumental feat core to their value proposition: Real-time indexing of the entire web, not just a handful of sites and not just pages linked to from real-time social sites. Essentially, it’s the same kind of P2P network technology that makes Skype or SETI@home possible; all the nodes in the network share bandwidth-intensive tasks, such as indexing the entire Internet in real time. Here’s how the indexing and ranking work: Each time a user who has downloaded and installed Wowd visits a website, without his taking any further action, that page is “voted up” on Wowd. Conceptually, it’s a little bit like Digg or Hacker News in that the number of users rather than keywords, backlinks, or timeliness, determine ranking. At scale, this could mean that Wowd would be a more workable version of the human-powered search engine, which their team believes will always generate more interesting results than a machine-powered search engine.Wowd is funded by Draper Fisher Jurvetson (DFJ), KPG Ventures, and the Stanford University Engineering Venture Fund. Their team includes startup vets with a total of four successful exits and experience working on projects such as the Intel P6 processor and technology for surface operations on Mars.Check out this interview with Wowd CEO Mark Drummond, conducted by Tim Reha: In terms of data privacy, Wowd’s system doesn’t look at local files, Wowd searches, IP addresses, personal behavior, secure pages or pages that require a login, or any sites “blacklisted” in a user’s settings. And of course, Wowd’s default setting blocks their gathering data on any adult-content pages; that is to say, all your pr0n will still belong to you.The first 300 ReadWriteWeb readers to click here will also be able to join Wowd’s private beta and experience firsthand the magic of human-powered recommendations. first_imgThe magisterial probe, ordered by the Punjab government into the Amritsar train accident in which 60 people died, has recorded statements of more than 150 people, including railway officials and Navjot Kaur Sidhu, the chief guest at the Dussehra event. “The report is complete and it will be submitted on Tuesday to the Punjab Home Secretary N.S. Kalsi,” said Jalandhar Divisional Commissioner B. Purushartha, who was appointed Special Executive Magistrate by the government to probe the October 19 accident. He said statements of more than 150 people including Railway officials and eyewitnesses were recorded. Statements of Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of Punjab Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu, and the Dussehra event organiser Saurabh Madan were also recorded. Navjot Singh Sidhu has submitted his statement in writing, Mr. Purushartha said. The Opposition, the Akali Dal, has rejected the institution of the magisterial probe and sought registration of case against Ms. Sidhu and the event organiser. Sixty people were mowed down by a passing train while watching the burning of a Ravana effigy in Amritsar as they could not see the train approaching them. The Railways had initially refused to order a probe, saying it was a case of trespassing and not negligence by its officials or the loco-pilot. But two weeks after the accident it said the Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety will probe the tragedy.last_img read more

Softball Ohio State opens season ready to continue previous years success

Ohio State then-junior shortstop Lilli Piper rounds third base with the intent to score against Wright State on Sep. 24. Credit: Gretchen Rudolph | For The LanternKelly Kovach Schoenly has experience in leading Ohio State to victory. Over the past six seasons as the softball head coach, she has accumulated 199 wins, including 13 wins against Top 25 opponents. However, in her tenure with the Buckeyes, she has not had a better season than the one she had last year. Ohio State had a record of 36-16, the program’s highest win total since 2010. The Buckeyes also won 14 of 22 Big Ten games this past season, but winning only two of four games in their NCAA regional.“We represented Ohio State very well. We competed with the very top teams all the way to the end,” Schoenly said. Now, the Buckeyes are preparing to try and not only match, but exceed last season’s successes. “We worked very hard,” sophomore catcher Claire Nicholson said. “I think it’s ended too early for us. I think we have a lot more coming this year.”Ohio State will have six seniors returning for the 2019 season: pitcher Morgan Ray, pitcher Katya Duvall, catcher Emily Clark, shortstop Lilli Piper, outfielder Bri Betschel and outfielder/first baseman Megan Choinacky.Piper was the major contributor for the team a season ago, leading the team with a .404 batting average, which was 48th-best in the country, 20 home runs, tied for eighth-most in the NCAA, and 58 RBI.  The expectations for Piper remained the same heading into 2019, as she was named to the preseason USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year watch list prior to the start of her senior season. With Schoenly saying that the senior class has contributed to where the team is today, Ohio State will still look a bit different than it did last season. The Buckeyes added four freshmen — outfielder Meg Otte, infielder Ashley Prange, outfielder Kaitlyn Coffman and pitcher Jessica Ross — and a transfer in sophomore Lauren Rice, who spent her freshman season at Missouri. Ohio State also added a new assistant coach in the offseason in Jordan Clark, the former volunteer assistant coach at Arkansas. “She has brought in a lot of new ideas,” Nicholson said. “We got to teach her a new culture too. It’s really great to have Jordan with us.”Schoenly said she is excited to develop a new identity this season and is excited to start again. But even with the change, Nicholson said the culture of the team will remain the same. “We have a culture that is just unbelievable,” Nicholson said. “There is definitely a way of life we like to stick to and we have a lot of things very important to us. So we get excited to share that.”Ohio State will begin its season Friday in Orlando, Florida, when the Buckeyes take on George Mason, Ole Miss, North Florida and UCF in the Friends of Jaclyn Tournament. read more

Wipro in focus after TCS Infosys declare Q2 results

first_imgInvestors’ gaze will now be on Azim Premji-controlled Wipro after the top two IT software services companies — Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Infosys — declared their September quarter (Q2) results on Thursday and Friday, respectively.Of particular interest, will be the company’s revenue numbers and whether they exceed the $1,931 million to $1,950 million guidance for the September quarter given by the company when it declared its June quarter results in July. The revenues came in at $1,930.8 million for the June quarter.Wipro shares were trading at Rs 475 on the BSE at around 12.49 pm.  Infosys, which declared its Q2 results on Friday, reported 8.2 percent YoY to $2,587 million and 3.5 percent on a sequential basis. However, the company slashed its full-year revenue guidance in constant currency terms to 8-9 percent from 10-5-11.5 percent given after the declaration of June quarter results.TCS reported 5.2 percent YoY growth in revenues to $4,374 million. Both the companies had warned of headwinds from a revenue growth perspective during the quarter gone by.”It has been an ‘unusual Q2’ for TCS. Growing uncertainties in the environment is creating caution among customers and resulted in holdbacks in discretionary spending this quarter. In additional, volatility in markets like India and Latin America also muted revenue growth,” N Chandrasekaran, CEO and MD of TCS, had said in a statement.Infosys expressed similar views and lowered its revenue guidance for the current fiscal.”While we continue to navigate an uncertain external environment, we remain focused on executing our strategy and increasing momentum of our software plus services model. Considering our performance in the first half of the year and the near-term uncertain business outlook, we are revising our revenue guidance,” Vishal Sikka, CEO of Infosys, said in a statement.Infosys and TCS shares were trading with minor change at Rs 1,041.30 apiece (down 1.02 percent) and Rs 2,340.85 (up 0.53 percent), respectively, at around 1 pm.The BSE Sensex was up 69 points at 27,712.last_img read more
