Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a bill extending the last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States a week before the pact was due to expire. Both houses of the Russian parliament voted unanimously Wednesday to extend the New START treaty for five years. Putin and U.S. President Joe Biden had discussed the nuclear accord a day earlier, and the Kremlin said they agreed to complete the necessary extension procedures in the next few days. The pact’s extension doesn’t require congressional approval in the U.S., but Russian lawmakers had to ratify the move before Putin could sign off on Friday.

Summer is here and it’s time to spoil yourself at the Homegrown Food Festival in LYIT on the 11th and 12th July. 2014 saw the launch of the Homegrown food festival in Aura leisure centre with the help of the Letterkenny town council the show proved to be a great success, “Well organised, great to see an event like this in this area of Donegal” – Eve-Anne McCarron, The food coast. Last year the show had over 5,000 guests during the two days with the highlights being the artisan producers from across the country showing everything from homemade chocolates to native beef from Dexter cows to a big collection of craft beers and ciders, along with the producers we were proud to have some great chefs giving demonstrations over the two days including Rachel Allen, Paul Rankin, Brian McDermott and many more. This year in conjunction with the Local enterprise board and Letterkenny Institute of Technology the festival will be held on the showgrounds in a custom built marquee at LYIT.We’ve introduced a separate area for the demonstrations and an eating area so you won’t have to wait to enjoy your treats. Some of the great line up this year includes Kevin Dundon, whose Modern Irish Food was awarded Silver World Medal – the highest award given in the inaugural food series category beating off competition from some of the world’s leading food television producers and broadcasters at the New York film and television awards. Along with Kevin we proud to have back Rachel Allen, who proved to be a great crowd favourite at last year’s show.On both days the “No salt chef” Brian McDermott will be showcasing his skills in the kitchen and teaching us how to be a little bit healthier when we are cooking.Ian Orr, from Browns restaurant, will be cooking up some mouth-watering dishes to further tantalise our palates and Letterkenny’s own Martin Anderson will be MC over the two days. This year we have an inflatable fun area for the kids to enjoy and again entry will be free for all kids under 12.We are very excited to have such a great program in store for our guests and can’t wait to see what the exhibitors will have as tasters enticing us to buy.www.homegrownfoodfestival.ie Facebook: HomeGrownfoodfestivalTwitter: homegrownfoodfeSTAR LINE-UP ANNOUNCED FOR DONEGAL’S MOST EXCITING FOOD FESTIVAL was last modified: July 2nd, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:BusinessFeaturesnews
Valentine’s Day is celebrated on 14 February every year, across the world. However, the origins of this romance-filled day and its patron saint – St Valentine – have been shrouded in mystery. The modern Valentine’s Day is filled with Christian and Roman traditions, but the most interesting part is the ‘Legend of St Valentine’.One legend states that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he decided to outlaw marriage for men.Valentine realised the injustice of Claudius’s decree and defied him by continuing to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be executed. On the evening before Valentine was to be executed, he is supposed to have written the first “valentine” card himself, addressed to the daughter of his jailer Asterius, whom he was in a relationship with, signing as “Your Valentine”.The expression “From your Valentine” was later adopted by modern Valentine letters. Today, the almond tree remains a symbol of abiding love and friendship.Though embellishments have been made and the legend tweaked through the years, and we may never know the true origins of Valentine’s Day, this legend is an example of how important love is, as well as the people we love.Click to receive news links via WhatsApp. Or for the latest news, visit our webpage or follow us on Facebook and Twitter.
