New wind farm for Oyster Bay

The project is expected to create 200 jobs.Recently authorised by the Department of Environmental Affairs, the project will hold an estimated generation capacity of 160MW, with each turbine capable of producing between 1.8MW and 3MW.“Given the high unemployment levels and limited job opportunities in the area, this will represent a significant social benefit,” said Duncan Ayling, head of development for RES.Of the jobs that are expected to be created in the construction process, said Ayling, about 15% will be available to skilled personnel such as engineers and technicians as well as individuals who will take on management and supervisory roles.A further 65% of the opportunities will go to semi-skilled personnel like drivers and equipment operators, while 20% will be made up of employees in the low skills bracket, like construction labourers and security staff.Impact on the communityMembers from the local community are likely to qualify for the majority of the low skilled and some of the semi-skilled employment opportunities. The company will provide on-site training and implement a mentoring programme in order to develop the capacity of employees. A health and safety training program will also be implemented.“RES is committed to engaging with the local community and the municipality with regard to using the project to support job creation and promote skills development,” Ayling said.He added that the social impact will be felt mostly in the employment benefits, but infrastructure spending – which is estimated at R2.4-billion (about US$289 000) during the construction phase – will help boost the local economy. The construction of the wind farm, including infrastructure, is expected to begin by 2013 at the latest, and take approximately 24 months to complete. The project is anticipated to be up and running by 2016, with an operational life expectancy of 25 years. The wind farm evolutionThe farm will also connect to Eskom’s Melkhout sub-station situated north of the nearby town of Humansdorp.According to the Southern African Alternative Energy Association, 88 applications for wind farms have been received by the Eastern and Western Cape authorities and some of these are expected to have as many as 600 turbines located on them.According to figures submitted to the Department of Environmental Affairs in 2011, a total of 40 wind farms are likely to be erected in the Western Cape and if these are approved, about 2 800 turbines will be installed around the province.RES selected the site near Oyster Bay for its high wind speeds, its proximity in relation to the existing electricity grid and minimal constraints from a construction point of view. The final number and size of the turbines, according to the company, is yet to be determined and will be based on further studies of wind regime, terrain and environmental constraints.Integrated Energy Plan for South AfricaThe Oyster Bay project falls under the Department of Minerals and Energy’s Integrated Energy Plan (IEP) for South Africa, launched in 2003.The ten-year plan declares South Africa’s continued reliance on coal, but also uses modelling to forecast which energy sources can be used most effectively to meet growing demand. The plan advocates change of energy sources, including renewable technologies such as wind and solar energy, as well as fuel switching to improve energy efficiency. In her keynote address at the energy planning colloquium in Johannesburg last month, Energy Affairs minister Elizabeth Dipuo Peters said gas can play a role, not only in the generation of electricity, but also as an alternate fuel in meeting household and industrial energy needs.“The IEP will provide a roadmap of the future energy landscape for South Africa and guides future energy infrastructure investments and policy development,” the minister said.last_img read more

When Your Funding is Your Worst Enemy

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Related Posts Tags:#start#StartUp 101#startups Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… dana oshirocenter_img One of the biggest tests of startup founder savvy is the period after you’ve just raised funding. It’s akin to the Amish rite of passage rumspringa, as young and sometimes inexperienced founders are given the opportunity to explore new opportunities in the hopes that the experience will ground them and strengthen them as leaders. Unfortunately, many do not find their way back to the path of revenue, or even to a product roadmap. Funding is often sought out to scale up a product, but it can also be your worst nightmare. If there’s one thing we learned from the dot com bust, it’s that you should be looking for your revenue model before building the in-office climb wall or partying on luxury yachts. Silicon Valley business lawyer George Grellas explains, “In early-stage companies, you will regret such spending when you hit the bumps in the road where you wish you had that cash. Inevitably, you will hit such bumps. Plan accordingly.” This funding problem isn’t so much about founders not knowing about free web apps to run their everyday business or the cost savings of an elastic workforce and cloud services. This funding problem is one where a ramen profitable company has just been given what it believes to be a blank check. Funding is not a blank check, it’s a promise to get the company to an agreed upon milestone in the hopes that the value of the business will grow. If the value of the business grows, investors, cofounders and hopefully early employees will benefit. The sooner you hit your milestones (if the business model and product roadmap are correct), the less likely you are to have to issue more stock and give more of the company away. In other words, the less you waste on luxury items, the more likely everyone you work with is going to get paid. Retain your staff with decent pay, good machines and a comfortable chair, but let them know what they stand to gain by hitting the milestones. Every successful entrepreneur will tell you to spend where you know you’ll see a return on investment – the right business development mix, good engineers and a solid infrastructure. Remember that if you do manage to see a lucrative exit, you’ll have all the time in the world to live the high life, but for now, maintain your focus and stay as lean as possible. If you’ve got lean startup tips, by all means leave them in the comments below. As well, cautionary tales of good money being thrown after bad are also welcome. You Are Upset Because You Care

first_imgYour client is not getting the outcome that you promised them when they made the decision to buy from you. Your team is struggling to produce those outcomes, and you are upset that things aren’t going well. You are right to be upset, and you are right to care about the outcomes you promised. You are, in fact, accountable for the results you sell, and this is how you build lifelong relationships. You are almost wrong to start trying to make change from that negative state.Breath. Compose yourself. Put yourself in the positive, optimistic, empowered and empowering state, and go work with your team to help them acquire the resources they need or make the changes necessary to succeed. You will not get greater outcomes from having this conversation from a negative emotional state. One of the main reasons that your client isn’t producing the outcomes you promised is because they are not doing what they need to do on their side. Your team is now picking up their end of the stick, and now you need your client to pick up their end of the stick. The upset feeling you have is based on your telling yourself that this is their fault, and that you are being unfairly accused of failing. You care about your client, their outcomes, and your reputation.Sit for a minute (or ten, but no more than that). Decide not to be defensive and not to do or say anything to cause your client to feel the need to defend themselves. Take responsibility for not preparing them better, and ask them how you can help them do what they need to do. If you want help with the language you need to have this conversation, look to Chapter 13 in The Lost Art of Closing. You don’t produce better results by being upset. You produce better results by transforming that negative emotional state into a more resourceful state, and then taking positive actions with a positive attitude to change things. Essential Reading! Tensions surge as US accuses Iran of attacking tankers

first_imgStill image taken from a US military handout video purports to show Iran`s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) removing an unexploded limpet mine from the side of the Kokuka Courageous Tanker on 13 June. Photo: AFPThe United States accused Iran of carrying out attacks that left two tankers ablaze in the Gulf of Oman on Thursday, escalating tensions across the region and sending world oil prices soaring.Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned that Washington will defend its forces and allies in the region, and the United States pressed its case as the UN Security Council met to address the incident — the second in a month in the strategic sea lane. With tensions spiraling between Iran and the United States, the European Union called for “maximum restraint” as UN chief Antonio Guterres warned the world cannot afford a major confrontation in the Gulf.Iran labelled the apparent attacks as “suspicious,” as its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei rebuffed overtures by visiting Japanese leader Shinzo Abe to open talks with US president Donald Trump. But Pompeo said there was strong evidence of Iran’s culpability, after the US Navy said it had spotted an unexploded magnetic limpet mine stuck to the hull of one of the vessels. The US top diplomat said that in region only Iran had the ability to undertake such an operation.”It is the assessment of the United States that the Islamic Republic of Iran is responsible for the attacks,” Pompeo announced.”This is based on intelligence, the weapons used, the level of expertise needed to execute the operation, recent similar Iranian attacks on shipping, and the fact that no proxy group operating in the area has the resources and proficiency to act with such a high degree of sophistication,” he said.Explosions off Iran coastThe two vessels were struck by explosions in the early daylight hours Thursday after leaving the Strait of Hormuz and traveling around 25 nautical miles off Iran’s southern coast headed toward Asia. The Norwegian-owned Front Altair ethanol tanker was hit by three explosions, according to the Norwegian Maritime Authority, and continued to burn late Thursday.Explosions also struck the Japanese-owned Kokuka Courageous, which was loaded down with methanol, but the fire on board was soon extinguished. There was no claim of responsibility for the blasts, which struck both tankers at the waterline.Iran said its navy rescued several dozen crew members of the two vessels, while the US Navy said it had picked up 21 from the Kokuka Courageous.Washington has dispatched the destroyer USS Mason to the scene “to provide assistance,” the US Central Command said in a statement.Series of attacksPompeo called Thursday’s tanker explosions “the latest in a series of attacks” he alleged were undertaken by Iran or its “proxies,” including, he said, a missile attack against a southern Saudi Arabia airport by the Iran-aligned Huthis in Yemen on Wednesday.”Taken as a whole, these unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to international peace and security, a blatant assault on the freedom of navigation and an unacceptable campaign of escalating tension by Iran,” he said. The United States has accused the Islamic republic over 12 May attacks on four tankers anchored off the United Arab Emirates port of Fujairah, just at the entrance of the Hormuz Strait.Pompeo said Iran was lashing out because of the impact of US and international sanctions, but said it had no right “to attack innocent civilians and engage in nuclear blackmail.””The United States will defend its forces, interests and stand with our partners and allies to safeguard global commerce and regional stability,” he warned. The US also called Thursday for the UN Security Council to confront the “clear threat” posed by Iran, as the council met behind closed doors to hear a briefing on Washington’s assessment that Tehran was responsible.Oil prices jumped at the threat of open conflict at the Hormuz chokepoint, through which transit some 15 million barrels of crude oil every day, as well as hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of imports for the Gulf countries. In London, the Brent benchmark jumped 2.2 per cent to $61.31 a barrel, while in New York, the US crude standard West Texas Intermediate, also rose 2.2 per cent, to $52.28.”We are in a dangerous moment in the region with this emerging pattern of attacks,” said Elizabeth Dickinson, senior analyst with International Crisis Group.”Any miscalculation or misunderstanding risks a spiral toward more direct confrontation,” she told AFP.Abe in TehranThe latest incident came as Abe was on an unprecedented visit to Tehran, seeking to defuse tensions.”It is essential that Iran plays a constructive role in building solid peace and stability in the Middle East,” Abe told a joint news conference with Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani.”Today, tension is rising in the Middle East. Some experts point out that the conflict might be triggered accidentally,” he said.Supreme Leader Khamenei rejected Abe’s overture, saying: “We have no doubt in your goodwill and seriousness, but regarding what you said the US president told you, I don’t consider Trump as a person worthy of exchanging messages with.”In Washington, Pompeo said the United States aimed to bring Iran back into negotiations — “at the right time” — over its nuclear program and regional activities. But Trump dismissed the idea of early talks.”I personally feel that it is too soon to even think about making a deal. They are not ready, and neither are we!” he tweeted.last_img
