Australia too good for England at Twickenham

first_imgSunday Nov 8, 2009 Australia too good for England at Twickenham Australia overcame their first hurdle in an attempt to emulate the class of 84 as they beat England 18-9 at Twickenham on Saturday. The Wallabies put their poor Tri Nations season behind them as they came back from being 9-5 down at half time with a far better second half showing, with young scrumhalf Will Genia putting in a man of the match performance. It was an England side buoyed by the return of Jonny Wilkinson, but the Aussies absorbed the pressure then gradually took control of the match. Coach Robbie Deans was impressed with the patience shown by his side. I was happy with the way we kept out composure and wore them down,” he said. “The guys didn’t become frantic after the missed opportunities and that trust and patience paid off and that’s a habit we want to keep.” England have an unprecedented amount of injuries at the moment, with only four of Martin Johnsons team having taken to the field in the corresponding fixture last year. The form of returning world cup winners Lewis Moody, Steve Thompson, and flyhalf Wilkinson was a positive for the England coach. “It’s great to have them back,” said Johnson. “People have asked me all week what Jonny brings to the game and I’d say ‘just watch the game’ – he’s a world class player,” he said. Wilkinson landed a drop goal after three minutes as he signalled his return to the international game in style. He tackled as hard as ever, and at one stage it looked as though he was going to lift the England side to victory. Australia, with injury concerns of their own, had many opportunities and only needed to capitalise on two of them. Eight points from Matt Giteau and the first half try to Genia, along with a great second half try to Adam Ashley-Cooper, sealed the win.  Time: 08:38 ADVERTISEMENT Posted By: rugbydump Share Send Thanks Sorry there has been an error Related Articles 81 WEEKS AGO scottish prop saves fire victim 84 WEEKS AGO New Rugby X tournament insane 112 WEEKS AGO Vunipola stands by his comments supporting… From the WebThis Video Will Soon Be Banned. Mauricio Pochettino believes Dele Alli can make England’s Euro 2016 squad

first_img Press Association Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino is backing Dele Alli to be included in England’s Euro 2016 squad next summer. Pochettino had urged caution on pushing Alli into the England squad too soon but the Argentine believes the midfielder can keep his spot if he continues his current form. “If he follows in the same way that he’s played in the last few months then maybe he will have the opportunity to go,” Pochettino said. “It’s not because he’s young and 19 years old, football is about performance. “He is still young but very mature – on the pitch and off it – and he’s a great boy and we’re happy how he has adapted in the different levels, in a different league. “The Premier League is very tough and he came from League One and he adapted himself in a very good way.” Alli is likely to play a major role against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool on Saturday as Tottenham are short in midfield given injuries to Ryan Mason (knee) and Nabil Bentaleb (ankle), while Eric Dier is suspended. Mousa Dembele or Tom Carroll could partner Alli in the middle of the park, or another option would be to push centre-back Toby Alderweireld into the defensive midfield role. “Always it’s a problem when you have some players in this situation but we have a big squad, I trust in all players,” Pochettino said. “Sometimes you have to decide who is the best player to play in different games, but I’m happy with the squad. “Always you want to have all players fit and available to decide who to pick, but this is football and we need to accept the situation.” center_img Alli made his senior international debut against Estonia last Friday and then came on as a substitute in the 67th minute of England’s 3-0 win over Lithuania. It has been a rapid rise to fame for the 19-year-old, who was playing in League One with MK Dons only five months ago. last_img read more
